The project

This high-end condominium residence in Quincy, Massachusetts, is a penthouse suite finished with 1809 chestnut, wormy chestnut and pine, reclaimed from the floors and walls of the original 1809 Toy Factory building in Winchendon, Massachusetts. The material was selected, remilled, delivered, and installed as one careful process, from Toy Town's Winchendon shop to the finished rooms.

From salvage to install

A careful sequence, board by board.

01

Salvage

Toy Town salvaged 1809 chestnut, wormy chestnut and pine, board by board, from the floors and walls of the original 1809 Toy Factory building in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Sam hand-picked each board to the client's specifications, loaded it onto the truck, and brought it back to the Winchendon shop.

02

Millwork

At the shop, the boards were re-milled on an 18-foot rip line saw, making them perfectly straight. That gave the project the custom blend the client had asked for.

03

Delivery and installation

The finished material was delivered to the client's home and carried up three flights of stairs, piece by piece. It was installed in the hallways and great room.

04

The finishing details

Toy Town milled custom vertical grain heart pine molding to match and fitted it around every doorway on the job. A custom-built box beam was fabricated in the workshop and installed in the hallway.
